LOS ANGELES, California: Kia has become the second largest manufacturer of electric vehicles sold in the United States, second only to Tesla.
The race for second place was largely being waged by Kia, Ford, and a small group of automakers seeking to become leaders in the U.S. electric vehicle market.
Kia's success is based upon Q1 2022 sales, and could change, depending on the remainder of the year's sales.
In fact, Kia's hold on the position will remain tenuous, since it is only some 1,000 units ahead of Ford in EV sales for the quarter.
As a comparison, Tesla is selling more than 13 times the number of EVs than second place Kia. In latest reports, Tesla dominates nearly 72 percent of the U.S. market and has become the number one selling luxury vehicle of all engine types in the U.S., not just electric.
Also this week, it was reported that the top five EV brands by U.S. sales are Tesla, Kia, Ford, Hyundai and Nissan.
Kia and Hyundai, which are largely a joint venture, make up almost 10 percent of all EV sales in the U.S. Ford remains just under 5 percent, Nissan is less than 3 percent.
