TEHRAN, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf visited Syria for talks with its senior officials on expanding economic cooperation between the two countries, Tasnim News Agency reported Wednesday.
Upon arrival in Damascus on Tuesday, Qalibaf said a comprehensive cooperation agreement is being devised by officials of the two countries and would be approved by their respective legislative bodies.
Hailing the success of the Syrian government in weathering security threats of terrorist groups, he said Syria "is now on the road to economic development."
"Syria is the closest area to Iran that can provide access to the European markets and the Mediterranean, and can create a lot of opportunities that favor industrial, agricultural, and tourism capacities as well as cooperation in oil sector," the Iranian speaker said when leaving for Syria on Tuesday.
During his stay in Damascus, Qalibaf will also meet with Iranian and Syrian businessmen in the Arab country, according to the report.
