DUBAI, UAE - A 19-year-old Emirati man who raped a visiting tourist at gunpoint in Dubai has been jailed for just six months.
The Dubai Court of First Instance handed down the sentence on Thursday.
According to public prosecution records, the Emirati student threatened the woman, who is 28 and is from Kenya, with a gun and raped her under duress.
A complaint was filed at the Al Rashidiya police station.
The woman said she arrived in Dubai on 9 December last year and was looking for a job.
"After 6:30 pm on the day of the incident, I got in touch with a Cameroonian man who asked to meet me in the parking lot of a shopping centre in Al Nahda, Sharjah, saying he would pay for the taxi," she said.
"When I asked the latter where he was driving me, he said to a remote location where my workplace is situated without telling me what would be the nature of the job," she told the prosecutor.
"He made a phone call and two men in a car arrived. I could understand they were blaming him because I am old and could be his mother's age. They told him to let me go."
After the other men left the woman said the man asked her to have sex with him. She refused. "He tore up my shirt and then threatened me with a small gun he took from under his seat. I got so scared when he injected himself with some substance," she said.
The woman says the Emirati man forced her into the back of the car where he repeatedly raped her for about an hour.
She called Dubai Police as she was driven back. "After he was ordered to drop me at Al Rashidiya police station, he got so angry he threw my phone from the window. He said he would do whatever he wanted and I could do nothing about it. I then pulled his head towards me and he almost lost control over the steering wheel. He pulled over later and pushed me outside. I fell with his phone with me," she told the prosecutor.
A police sergeant said the woman was found by police patrol officers walking on a street at 11:40 pm. "She said she was raped by an Arab man after she went to meet an African man for a job. The defendant was later identified through a source," said.
The forensic report showed revealed the defendant's DNA traces on the woman's body.
The man can appeal the ruling and the sentence within 15 days.
