CALIFORNIA, U.S. - Facebook and Instagram users in several parts of the world complained about not being able to access the apps for several hours.
With Facebook refusing to comment on the outage for the initial part of the day on Tuesday, many users took to Twitter to complain about the apps crashing, and the lack of any explanation by the company.
According to DownDetector, the vast majority of users that experienced the outage were located in the U.S. and across Europe.
However, the independent tracking website also received outage reports from users in South America and Asia, who complained about experiencing downtime since at least 8:15 a.m. ET.
Within hours after the outage started, #FacebookDown began trending on Twitter and users also complained about the Instagram app crashing.
Further, users said that the Facebook outage report featured an error message which stated, "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can."
Subsequently, Facebook issued a statement acknowledging the app, but not before the internet, and especially Twitter was flooded with gifs and memes about the recent scandals the company has faced and the suspicious outage on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, in an official statement by the company, a Facebook spokesperson said, "Were aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. Were working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."
Some users from different parts of the world also complained about the WhatsApp messaging service - which is also owned by Facebook failing to load.
After Facebook suffered an outage on its developer site, a Facebook spokesperson left a message on the site, which read, "We are investigating the issue and working on a resolution."
